This is obviously good news for the parents of bilingual children. Absence of formal training in one of the languages is not necessarily detrimental to the development of that language, if such continuity is fostered by the parents at home. C H A P T E R T WO What is bilingualism? 1 Some definitions of bilingualism If you ask people in the street what ‘bilingual’ means, they will almost certainly reply that it is being able to speak two languages ‘perfectly’. Unfortunately, we cannot even describe exactly what speaking one language perfectly involves.

To begin at the point where the speaker of one language can produce complete, meaningful utterances in the other language. (E. Haugen, 1953) The phenomenon of bilingualism [is] something entirely relative . . We shall therefore consider bilingualism as the alternate use of two or more languages by the same individual. (W. F. Mackey, 1962) The bilingual or wholistic view of bilingualism proposes that the bilingual is an integrated whole which cannot easily be decomposed into two separate parts.

Judgements as to the relative ‘purity’ or ‘beauty’ of these sounds are value judgements which may be subjectively real for speakers but which have no objective basis. Pronunciation is not just a matter of articulating consonants and vowels in the right place and in the right manner. Other aspects of speech that involve more than single consonants or vowels, such as stress, length, tone and intonation, are just as important. A speaker’s pronunciation is an index of the social group to which he belongs, wishes to belong or perceives his interlocutor to belong.
