At the season’s World Cup event in China, Apolo captured the overall title, for the second consecutive year. There was no question: Apolo’s short track was on the right track. But the seemingly unstoppable skater’s biggest accomplishment was yet to come. In Austria, at the final World Cup event of the season, the skater from Seattle again gave it his all. He not only won the finals in the 500-, 1,500-, and 3,000-meter races, but he also took home the gold for each of these distances for the entire year.

The Koreans put in a tough fight during their laps around the ice, but in the end, Apolo’s hard work, perseverance, and newly found alternative techniques helped him make it across the finish line first. He had won the Junior World Title and again had set a record as the youngest ever to achieve the title. This accomplishment was exactly what he needed to rebuild the confidence he had lost. He felt more certain than ever that this was the mark of his comeback. Apolo Gets Serious 51 A Troublesome Back After his 1999 Junior World Championships win, Apolo continued to compete in events around the globe like the World Short Track Speed Skating Championships in Bulgaria, where he won silver in the 500 meters and placed fourth overall, despite his back giving him some trouble.

Teammates and competitors alike were looking to knock Apolo from the top spot. Many could not accept that such a young skater was the leader at this level of competition.
